Sailing in Scotland

Scotland has some of the most beautiful sailing grounds in the whole world, despite the notoriously bad weather. Here are a few links which will help people wishing to come to Scotland to sail.

Gaelforce Marine is a chain of chandleries in Scotland and England. With shops in Inverness to Glasgow and Plymouth, they offer a wide range of marine items for leisure sailors and commercial fishermen alike. Why not pop in to have a chat with me (when I'm in) at the Glasgow branch and browse through our shop.

Kip Marina is a sheltered marina in an excellent location on the Clyde, sailors can easily decide to sail down south and out into the Irish Sea as well as explore the many anchorages and Lochs the Clyde has to the north of Kip.

Sandpoint Marina is located near Dumbarton, only 30 minutes away from Glasgow city centre and is a great place to go if you have work to do on your boat. They have travelhoists, big storage halls and also offer the choice of renting a private boat garage so you can keep your boat locked up and work on it without disturbing other people and boat owners.

James Watt Dock is located in Greenock and is ideal for short sails out into the Clyde. It is situated at the location of a historic dockyard, the marina buildings are still the same old dock buildings. There is a working dry dock next to it in which the Waverly and other ships are dry docked. Only 40 minutes from Glasgow city centre there is a Holiday Inn, a Premier Inn as well as a B&Q and a Tesco Extra close by, everything a sailor needs for winter maintenance!

Sailing Vloggers

In the modern day of internet and HD videos, it is becoming more common for sailors to share their experiences in form of video blogs (or vlogs). These can range from straightforward video logs of journeys up to highly entertaining documentries of life on board. Here are a few of my favourites, and you could fill a whole web page with them so of you have a vlog and would like to be listed here please tell me!

SV Delos are one of the best known vloggers out there, probably due to their excellent videos in terms of picture and sound quality and more importantly, contents. They have an entertaining way of telling their story and even have informational videos on talks they gave about living on board.

La Vagabonde is a comical channel to visit, from no exprience in sailing the owner of this yacht bought her in Italy and learnt to sail, well, while sailing! During his voyages he met up with a girl and together they have made their way over the Atlantic to America. They have a funny way of telling their story and you sometimes just want to crawl through the screen and help them out. But they always manage to get things right in the end, by trial and error.

Baby Blue is a yacht owned and sailed by an American married couple who decided to give up the rat race and take life as it comes, on a sailing boat.

Sailing Uma is another channel run by a couple, a couple who have little experience in sailing but wanted to escape the boring landlubbing life. From their first video "Don't buy a sofa" they have a comical way of telling their own version of how they looked for, looked at and finally bought a yacht. They have interesting videos on technical issues they were confronted with on board their new yacht.
